The Totty Cup is a school football tournament in the Don & Dearne region of South Yorkshire.  The trophy was originally donated to the Dearne Association by a Goldthorpe Picture House proprietor, Russell Totty, in the 1920’s (first recorded final 1923). Originally it was a “senior school” competition but is now a primary school competition.

The Don & Dearne Sports Association ran this competition as well as a representative team for many years.  Two of the players from the 1960’s (Frank Barlow & Geoff Salmons) donated a trophy for those schools knocked out in the early rounds – this is known as the Barlow-Salmons Shield (introduced 1974). Don & Dearne SFA had a well respected reprentative team during the 1950s, 60’s & 70’s.  Information on the history of these teams is sketchy – but a start has been made at the following website –  Don & Dearne Representative Team.

As well as documenting the history of these competitions, it is hoped that some of the gaps will be filled by some of those who have played in the competition throughout the years.

  4. Any reports when Thurnscoe gooseacre won it in either 99 or 2000 my son played in it Josh Sutton he scored the winner in the semi -final that year

    • Hi David,

      Sadly, this is a gap.

      We have a team photo for each winner of the Totty Cup since 1968. This one is missing. Whether or not one was taken, I do not know.

      The Totty Cup will be 100 years old in 2023 and it is hoped that the remaining outstanding photos will be found before then.

      If you could, in any way, spread the word amongst any team-mates of Josh’s that can still be contacted, I’d appreciate it.

      I’ll add the info about the semi-final winner to the webpage. Any idea who it was against?

  5. Totty Cup 1966 semi final. I played in the losing Darfield CP team.
    That small left winger was me!
    I’ve not seen that report before.
    I really don’t remember having a good game.
    I do remember us claiming a goal when we thought the ball had crossed the goal line, but was pulled back by the keeper.

      • No they didn’t. I recollect Stephen Cook going to the trials. He is mentioned in one of the other clippings. I think Kenneth Levitt went too.
        I’ve got a clipping somewhere about me scoring 4 goals in a Totty Cup game. I think it was against one of the Thurnscoe schools. We played on the big Hickleton MW pitch.

  7. I have some clippings at my parents’ from 99 and 2000 when I was at Fitzwilliam and got to the semis and final of either the totty cup or the BSS. I’ll dig them out and send in an email if you’d like?
