Paul Whitehouse:

I played in the 1970 final for Adwick Road.  My stand out memories of that final are three-fold.

The first was there was such a big crowd – all on the touchline, framing the pitch.  The second was Mr Sykes, the teacher who ran the team, rotated the captaincy.  The captain in the final was Alan Hoey, who was only in the second year of junior school when most of the team were either in the third or fourth year (Alan would later be a highly successful amateur boxer in his later teenage years – I think!) Thurnscoe’s captain was Billy Whitehurst – who I believe was also captain of the Don and Dearne – at the toss up Billy dwarfed Alan, which made me quite worried.  The third memory is from Graham Milner, our centre half, there was a goalmouth scramble in our penalty area and the ball was slowly rolling towards an open goal, but Graham mustered up all the speed he had and managed to clear the ball before it crossed the line.  Funny the things you remember.

That Adwick Road team won everything that year.   I’d forgotten how successful we were. We had some really good players.

The following year Adwick Road lost to Kilnhurst 5-0 in the semi-final.  Kilnhurst had some very good players: Graham Cresswell; Ian Cobb; Steve Coulson; Martin Cooke.  I think all four played in the Don and Dearne representative side in 1970-71.

Adwick Road: Headteacher at the time was Mr Brookes and the Football coach was Mr Sykes
Adwick Road also won the Junior Section League and Cup.  The Cup final was a 1 0 defeat of Queen Street.  Report – 28/5/70.
