Dearne Carrfield 2 Rawmarsh Thorogate 1

Totty 2006 report 001

GOALS either side of half-time gave Dearne Carrfield victory in a terrific Totty Cup final that will have left Rawmarsh Thorogate asking just how on earth they did not win this trophy.

They had enough chances to win two cups but could not find a way past Carrfield goalkeeper Sean Hearne.

As early as the fourth minute of the final, Carrfield defender Josh Cornwall was called upon to clear two Thorogate efforts off the line.

Kicking down a slight slope at Kilnhurst St Thomas School, Thorogate continued to create chances with Luke Bann going close and Lewis Linton dragging his shot across the face of goal.

A flowing move created space for Jordan Scothern who shot wide as the Rawmarsh side continued to knock on the door.

Jack Duggan had the best efforts of the early exchanges for Carrfield, forcing a good save from Ben Brydges and then firing a free-kick wide.

Thorogate’s Nick Saxton fired over the bar after a long Thorogate throw and Connor Richardson produced a great tackle to deny Mitchell Grainger a scoring chance for Carrfield.

Two minutes before the break Carrfield opened the scoring with a goal out of the blue.

A clearance landed at the feet of Jack Hasnip 30 yards out and he met it with flying half volley that flew into the bottom corner.

Carrfield preserved their lead by getting bodies in the way of Liam Graham’s free-kick which was parried into the air by goalkeeper Hearne. Grainger had two chances to double the Dearne lead at the start of the second half before eventually doing so. A Thorogate set-piece was broken up on the edge of the Carrfield area and the ball pumped long to Grainger who beat two defenders and fired the ball home.

Tiny Thorogate winger Liam Goulty – two years younger than most of his teammates – tried to lift the players with his silky skills. He set up substitute Emily Hope whose shot was blocked and then after jinking to the by-line his cut-back was scrambled away.

A 25-yard lob that sailed into the net from Kallum Taylor gave Thorogate hope with nine minutes left but they had run out of steam and Carrfield hung on for a 2-1 victory.
